I hear they were out protesting again
These young people have so much energy
They should at least focus it
On themselves for once.
These politicians will never change you know
They’re like expensive chameleons
We learnt our lesson the hard way
You see, we’ve been there, done that.
We too, fueled by our youthful optimism
And in the belief in dignity and justice
Stood up to tyranny of our days
Yet here we’re today, deeper into ignominy.
We know the script too well
A few will fall by the bullet
The brave ones who dare venture
Into the belly of the beast.
Yet a few more will disappear
Into nothingness leaving parents
Mourning with no graves to hold on to
What a travesty.
Yes, a few more will be let to roam
Our blood-haunted streets bearing scars
Of wounded egos which we mask for them
With feigned praises to our dear heroes.
You see we’ve seen these things.
So let’s call this protest Gen-Z protest
It’s their war to wage, we spectate
We too well know the outcome
We’d rather not share in the spoils.
When they finally fall in exhaustion
We’ll lift them up with both arms
Welcome them into the world of grown ups
We who have resigned.
Into our godforsaken slumber.
